Josef Kramhöller (1968–2000) – a fragile-subversive sprint through the 1990s

This show will feature selections from the oeuvre of Josef Kramhöller, an artist who died all-too young. Helmut Draxler characterized his work as infused with passive-aggressive intensity.

On the one hand, this memorial exhibition intends to demonstrate that the position Kramhöller took at the time is just as state-of-the-art today. On the other hand, the show illustrates to what extent Josef Kramhöller left traces in the works of those who studied with him at Munich’s Akademie der Bildenden Künste in the 1990s.

The exhibition “what a serious horror writing a play – hello man from kebab house”*, is supplemented by works of Bara, Thomas Helbig, Andy Hope 1930, Florian Hüttner, Franziska Hufnagel, Jochen Klein (1967–1997), and Amelie von Wulffen.

Their participation in the show indicates that they react to Josef Kramhöller, and thereby exemplifies their proximity to him and his oeuvre.

Josef Kramhöller was born in 1968 in Wasserburg/Inn and committed suicide in London in the year 2000. Kramhöller lived in London with interruptions. He studied at the Akademie für Bildende Künste, Munich and at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London.
