Couleur Européene - Couleur Soviétique - Couleur Chinoise
Christopher Williams
May 13 - July 1, 2000
The exhibition Couleur Europénne, Couleur Soviétique, Couleur Chinoise showing the latest works by American artist Christopher Williams.
The exhibition consists of 20 black-and-white and colour photographs. An upturned ’64 Renault Dauphine-Four is of equal interest to Christopher Williams as an idyllic Cuban beach scene or a view into a dish-washer. The most varied of subjects are treated with the same detached objectivity, the borderlines blurred between the everyday and the artistic gaze. Christopher Williams links elements from very different communication and sign systems, superimposing them, letting them clash, but always keeping within the given fine art framework.
Christopher Williams sees himself not just as a photographer, but more as an author and director, who, if necessary, avails himself of a professional photographer to capture an image. At first glance, the result seems smooth and cool, but on closer observation of the label contained in the image, and of the title, unexpected irritations arise.
